Three firefighters were injured—one seriously—after a gas-fueled explosion and fire at a commercial building on Amherst Street in Nashua this afternoon.
Fire crews were called to 440 Amherst Street around 2:15 p.m. for a reported gas leak. Shortly after arrival, a small explosion occurred, briefly trapping some firefighters before they escaped. An emergency alert warned people in the area to extinguish open flames, shut off burners, and prepare to evacuate.
Firefighters were ordered out of the building, which houses Greater Nashua Mental Health, while crews continued battling the fire from outside. Four people believed to have been inside remain unaccounted for. Amherst Street was shut down, and power was cut to nearby customers as a safety precaution.
