SYSC Director Resigns Amid Growing Scrutiny
The director of New Hampshire’s Sununu Youth Services Center has resigned effective immediately. Governor Kelly Ayotte announced Wednesday that Joshua Nye stepped down just one day after lawmakers reviewed allegations of abuse and neglect at the facility.
State officials are now considering reforms, including stronger oversight, improved staff training, and better incident reporting. Investigations were launched following reports of improper restraints and lockdowns at the center.
The Office of the Child Advocate says oversight has been increased, while state officials say many allegations remain unsubstantiated as reviews continue.
Human Remains Found at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard
Maine State Police are investigating after human remains were discovered in the water at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery. Officials say civilian divers found the remains Tuesday during a routine barge inspection near Dry Dock 3.
The Naval Criminal Investigative Service is assisting in the investigation. The remains will be examined by the Maine Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the person’s identity and cause of death.
Police Investigate Threat at Pinkerton Academy
Derry police say a reported threat against Pinkerton Academy does not appear to be credible. The school was evacuated Wednesday afternoon as a precaution after officials received the threat and could not immediately assess its validity.
Police say there will be an increased presence on campus while the investigation continues, and they’re asking the public not to spread unverified information.
